Last Monday I was able to sample an excellent sauvignon blanc from New Zealand that had all the necessary qualities to make it a wine of choice during these hot summer days. The Giesen 2003 sauvignon blanc from the Marlborough area is packed with fruit but has the citric and grassy appeal that make these wines so easy to drink with ceviche or oysters. In Parker's terms I'd rate this wine an 88, and at $11 it is a great deal. In my trip to New Zealand last year I was amazed at the incredible number of superb sauvignons that are available and never make it to the states. Without a doubt, NZ has re-written the chapter on this underrated white varietal. We had the Pinot Noir from Giesen also and I'm sad to say it was a weak disapointment, specially compared to the mighty Spanish red that sat next to it. Stay with the white and enjoy.
