Reliving SNICK: 15 Years Later

Ok, writing the title was weird enough, but somehow it has been 15 years since one of the most important staples of my childhood started - SNICK, saturday night nick! Recently I've been in a reminicing mood, especially of influencing factors (like De La Soul) from my 90s childhood. Any serious look at my childhood could not go without mentioning Nickelodeon, and by connection SNICK.

I think it would be fair to say we (kids my age) were part of that starting generation who grew up on Nick. I was a bit young when "you can't do that on television" first started, but I still remember the secret phrase that got people slimed, and that creepy lunch server guy who had no care for good hygiene. Still, Nick Jr. taught me and entertained me just as much as Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street. I mean who can forget David the Gnome and Eureka's Castle?

But let's get back on point: SNICK. Snick was THE thing to watch on saturday nights when you were too young to go out and socialize. I remember my brother & I watching "Are you afraid of the dark" and getting just a little creeped out every time the intro started (come on.. the creeky swing and eerie music, how was that not terrifying to an 8 year old?)

The first incarnation of SNICK had Roundhouse, Clarissa Explains it all, Ren & Stimpy & Are you Afraid of the Dark.

"Sex Education" Roundhouse

1. Roundhouse - for whatever reason I always associate Roundhouse as my favorite SNICK show, although looking back I probably enjoyed others more over the long haul. Still, the Kids version of In Living Color, was quite funny and entertaining to a child who rocked out to Sister Act 2 more than she should have.

watch an episode:Episode 2 "You can't fire your family"

"Intro" Clarissa Explains it All

2. Clarrissa Explains it All - Alright, what girl didn't have a crush on Sam, literally the boy next door? Clarissa was a quality family show which taught me that a taffy pull could be fun (even if I never figured otu what it was) and that all brothers can be quite annoying! Also, random fact - Did you know the Violent Femmes appeared in an episode of Clarissa Explains it all?

"Royal Canadian Yaksmen" Ren & Stimpy

3. Ren & Stimpy - By far one of the originators in cartoons targeted for kids with jokes going way over their heads with dirty raunchy un-PC jokes.

for amy: Log!!

Watch the Behind the Scenes

watch an episode: Stimpy's Big Day/The Big Shot

"Intro" Are you Afraid of the Dark

4. Are You Afraid of the Dark? - As mentioned before, that intro is creepy, I think it's the beating heart that really does the trick. Anyways, I can still vividly remember 1/2 the stories they told (like the radio station for dead people, or the prom night death, or that creepy monster that hides in your electronics!). I think they helped feed a generation of kids who also grew up reading R.L. Stine's Goosebumps (it was the coolest book series to read in elementary school, don't lie).

you can find episodes of AYAotD on you tube pretty easily (much like Where in the world is carmen san diego!) so I know a few of my friends have rewatched some episodes with me (that'd be you, Buds), but the stories are still entertaining even now. Plus, it's fun spotting future bigger actors in the episodes (Neve Campbell was made for Scream after doing "The Tale of the Dangerous Soup", am I right?).

watch an episode: Tale of the Frozen Ghost (special guest Melissa Joan Hart)

This line up ran for about 2 years, until the switched it up, getting rid of Clarissa & Roundhouse and Adding in "The Secret World of Alex Mack" and "All That"

"Alex Mack wears a Hat" Alex Mack Commercial
5. The Secret World of Alex Mack- Ok, who didn't want to be a kid in an accidental chemical spill with new powers to change your body into bad CGI effects of mercury?

watch the series ending: Ending

6. All That - Honestly, I think some of the sketch comedy on All That I found annoying or grating, especially in the later years after I stopped watching it (that means you Amanda Bynes). But there were still some good characters.

During 1996 Ren & Stimpy was replaced by Space Cases

7. Space Cases - This was the show that inspired me to dye my hair later on in life, because who didn't like Catalina's rainbow hair (yes I remember names). I'm sure space cases was nick's secret way to tap into sci-fi nerds, but w/e I enjoyed it!

The last incarnation of Snick that I watched in any real fashion had Kenan & Kel, All That, The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo, & Kablam, none of which I really watched, ex. for a few spideos of Shelby Woo because it was like the Karate Kid meets Nancy Drew!

After those years it was off to Jr High, but the memories of my nights with TV (thanks TV), have stuck with me. Re-watching many of these episodes and shows has brought back memories of corny jokes, and crazy fashion, that I completely forgot about. Still, it's been a lot of fun. What about you kids? Any Snick memories?

The Day has Arrived: Colbert + Ben & Jerry

FINALLY!!!

Classic line: "Willy Nelson? What's in it, shredded tax forms and hash?"

P.S. this would be a quality Spring Break present for me (what? I theme my presents!)

Family Guy & Gene Kelly = Amazing Dance Number

Ah, there are times when Family Guy knows exactly how to appeal to a girl's heart. While I'm not 1000% in love with Family Guy (yes, I do in fact prefer the South Park), there are those moments that are quite quality. I figured my mami would actually somewhat appreciate this, and perhaps Kat as well since she rocks out to the old-school movies with me. Anyways, on Family guy they incorporated a dance number from Gene Kelly's Anchors Aweigh where he dances with Jerry (of Tom & Jerry). In the Family Guy version, however, it's with Stewie (also quite adorable). So with that, enjoy the two clips, original and FG.

Dexter

One of my favorite shows this semester was Dexter, a Showtime show based on a book by Jeff Lindsay. It revolves around Dexter Morgan, who works for the Miami PD as a blood Spatter Specialist. He has a few secrets hidden, one being that he is a serial killer. But don't worry, he's a good serial killer, he only hunts down the bad guys. Well, at least usually. The bad news for him though is that there's another creepier, not nice serial killer in the streets. And this serial killer might know a bit too much about Dex. And that's a very bad thing.

Anyways, my intrest was purely on seeing Michael C. Hall as a sole lead in a show. Since he was so amazing in Six Feet Under, my previous Television Crack, I was intruiged by his appearance in another show about death. Honestly, it's crazy because the two characters he plays are so different. In one he's overly emotional, needy, and dependant, in the other he's explicitly emotionless and purposefully independant. In the end, both shows are just so different, but they're still so intense.

Last night was this season's finale and it was so good. I don't know how I'll survive until Season 2, but I'll find a way (maybe by finishing these final papers?). Point is, you too need to get sucked in, because who doesn't love a good mystery?

Levi's Ads

Somehow I can't really stop the commercial love, thank you TV. Today's feature will be with Levi's Ads. I love these almost as much as I love the Gap (Michel GOndry)Mash-up Ads (Which I will soon post about).

First up, is an ad I always found cute and hilarious, with a great song!

Next up, another funny one. I'm sur I'd be like this with some of my jeans (unbreathable skinny jeans!).

Another great song and funny video:

How can you pass up a Michel Gondry Video-- Especially one that ties together history and safe sex.

and yay sexy Michel Gondry mermaids:

and now for a bit of Gael Garcia Bernal sexiness:

And finally some Shakespeare (who hates your emo poetry):

Ok, that's enough commercial loving for now!

Heartbeats and Bouncy Balls

Remember my VW commercial love? Well, here's another commercial love. It's for Sony's Bravia flat screen tv I believe). It's a UK commercial, hence why we haven't enjoyed it. It's lovely simply because it's Jose Gonzales and thousands of bouncy balls in San Francisco. Enjoy!
