Music for that Southern Stress

A good friend of mine is currently working 24/7 on a campaign down in Kentucky. I went down to visit him and realized that if nothing else he needed some background music to help him get through the days. One mix to relax and one to stay away. So below are the track listings for the cds I made for him. Being down in Louisville made me really into my Cameron Crowe soundtracks (see Almost Famous or Elizabethtown), so the mixes are based on those 70s, southern, folksy, grooves.

Slow Southern Seventies Singer-Songwriters
1. Have a Little Faith in Me - John Hiatt
2. Desire - Ryan Adams
3. Sometimes we Cry - Van Morrison
4. Knot Comes Loose - My Morning Jacket
5. I'm on Fire - Bruce Springsteen
6. Ordinary - The Alternate Routes
7. Saturday Sun - Nick Drake
8. Breathe - Alexi Murdoch
9. Don't be Shy - Cat Stevens
10. Crosses - Jose Gonzales
11. Old Man - Neil Young
12. Saturday - Josh Rouse
13. That's the Way - Led Zepplin
14. The Winds that Blow - Duncan Sheik
15. Oh! Sweet Nothing - The Velvet Underground
16. The Upper Peninsula - Sufjan Stevens
17. Rocket Man - Elton John
18. Sanguine - The Avett Brothers
19. Picture in a Frame - Tom Waits

B is for Ben Lee

B

is for

Ben Lee

It was tricky to figure out which Ben to feature as my B, since obviously it had to be a Ben, but for me I decided to show my love to Ben Lee whose new album "Ripe" just dropped last month (and yes I own a copy.. paid for it with cold hard plastic and everything -- and who doesn't love a song called "What would Jay-Z do?"). I of course love each Ben for their own reasons, Kweller is the Quirky one, Folds is the hilarious one, and Lee is the adorable one. I mean come on listen to that aussie accent!

Musically, each of the Bens are different as well. I think Ben Lee tends to be the one who embraces pop the most, he likes the bubble gum beats, and I in turn enjoy clappin' my hands along ("catch my disease " will always make me smile). Anyways, "Awake is the New Sleep", his past album, was great to listen to on repeat. I actually identify it with the music I listened to and sent to a friend of mine who was goin' through a pretty bad time. For me, that music was that light in a suck-tastic time.

So, that is why Happy-go-Lucky Ben Lee is my B. Plus! He was the last Ben I got to see live, so the suspense might have something to do with it.

Anatomy 101: The Dance Party

So this weekend I was lucky enough to make it to the Michigan Med School's Fall Ball. Like all school dances, it was lots of fun, but when it came to the dance portion, I couldn't help but notice that the music choices could have been slightly better (let's put it this way: one section consisted of Nelly Furtado's Promiscuous Girl, 2 Justin Timberlake Songs, and then that Timbaland song w/ Nelly & Justin... the intensity of Timbaland was a bit too much for me + I  couldn't help but having the urge to call up Jay or Amy who would appreciate the music section).

Anyways, this was a med school dance, where were all the songs about the body? It would have been much more appropriate since most of the people there couldn't help but talk about how they needed to skin their cadavers and such (it was great dinner talk). So, I decided to make a dance mix appropriate to those who love the body so much. Feel free to listen and dance the night away!

Anatomy 101: The Dance Party
1. Girl Talk - Smash Your Head

2. The Fratellis - Flathead

3. De La Soul - Eye Know

4. Reel Big Fish - Brown Eyed Girl

5. Daft Punk - Face to Face

6. Death Cab for Cutie - Crooked Teeth

7. Fallout Boy - I've Got This Ringing in My Ears and None on My Fingers

8. AC/DC - If You Want Blood (You Got It)

9. The Knife - Heartbeats

10. The Killers - Bones

11. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Don't You Feel My Leg

12. Darondo - Legs

13. Fujiya & Miyagi - Collarbone

14. Junior Senior - Move Your Feet

15. Goldfrapp vs. Girls Aloud - Bi-ooh-la-logy
