May and Earlly Summer Mixtape

Maymix

You may have noticed there was no May mixtape. Instead I've combined May and June for a Summertime mixtape. These are tracks for getting you ready for the hot hot heat (ironically, none of their music though). So here are those quality songs to chill to during the nights of heat lightning and trying to survive driving with the windows down, giving up midway, and switching to the AC. So enjoy (purposeful misspellings and all)!

May and Earlly Summer Mixtape
1. Gobbledigook - Sigur Rós: Off the new Sigur Rós album, I think it captures the tone of their new music rather well. From everything I've heard off the new disc it's going to be amazing. I'm just excited that they're done with their oft-mentioned break throughout Heima. It also means I'll finally get a legit chance to see them live!

2. Alive With The Glory Of Love - Say Anything: I'm sorry but the teenage me, who's a sucker for old school Sandler flicks (Billy Madison still rules all) finds Say Anything to be way too adorable. If I had just gotten my license I'd totally borrow my mom's car to check em out on Warped Tour (I may have already done just that one summer). Still, these boys are hilarious in the PG-13 version of Bloodhound Gang. So enjoy while not feeling too awkward and ashamed! Also, check out this cute video of theirs. Oh! Also, I love the fact that they are NOT the band who signed my autographed Say Anything VHS movie from the Pho (If you know who DID sign it, you win a prize!).

3. Electric Feel (Justice Remix) - MGMT: So here's the thing (we started off friends...ok wait no), I don't really like MGMT that much, but  if you mix them with one part Justice they become much more managable and delicious (like an adult fruit beverage with too much alcohol and not enough fruit being mixed with some sweet sweet mango nectar). Anyways, you'll notice the signature Justice beats (which I can't impersonate) and the MGMT lyrics.

4. It's Not Impossible - Ben Sollee: As mentioned in an earlier post, all sorts of awesome and amazing. Note to self, pick up this album ASAP to rock out to with my Ra Ra Riot.

5. Hold It In - Jukebox the Ghost: A great local band who I caught live at the WTMD First Thursdays of the Month series. Check out the photos here.

6. Holiday (Madonna Cover) - Jack Johnson and G. Love: Old school Madonna and some summer Jack Johnson/G. Love love == a quality song with a new summer feel! Throw in a Spidey reference and I'm sure you'll find it fun fun fun!

7. Everyone Nose - N.E.R.D.: Boo to drug references, yay to catchy hooks and great beats! Enjoy the song, but don't magically think that it's ok to do Coke. Seriously. Oh, and don't be "that girl." See music video for example.

8. Gap - The Kooks: You'll notice that beyond the cover love, there's also boys-with-accent love on this mix. Lots of Brits to choose from. I've loved every track I've heard off the new Kooks album, and this one is no exception.

9. City vs. Country - Mobius Band: More known for their V-day covers disc, here's one of their original tracks to enjoy.

10. Let It Go - Jon Regen: Love love love his voice. Good ol' Piano Rock.

11. Wait For Me - Jamie Lidell: For the Jamie love see many earlier posts. This track (as well as Greenlight which may be on the next Summer mix) are two of the more surprisingly catchy and up-beat songs off the new album JIM. If you ever get a chance to see him live - DO IT! Heads up, Lollapalooza would be a great place to see him!

12. Within Your Reach - The Replacements: Something classic and old school, you know, to make my Daddy proud.

13. Life In Technicolor - Coldplay: "Coldplay? oh no! Poor Girl!" is what you may be thinking. Well breathe, it's just a short little instrumental that's actually pretty good. Viva La Vida (Loca) is decent enough if you enjoy U2 and Coldplay, but not enough to get annoyed by how hard they're trying.

14. Still Here - Girl Talk: As always, the alumni love. Off the Feed the Animals album. Picked this track for the Footloose, Ace of Base, The Band, and Salt'n'Pepa love - but definately not for the Fergie. Also, if you haven't gotten it yet, get Feed the Animals!

15. 1234 - Bikini: I don't have a heart-on for Feist like a lot of other people do, but I did love the original song. Maybe its because I just saw Wall-E, but this robotic/electric cover is great! It's a bit of a different feel from the original, but I still adore it.

16. Lost in the Post - The Wombats: A good song to dance out to and jump around. Another in the accent-tastic tracks.

17. The Day You Fell Apart - The New Frontiers: A Strong emotive song that got me hooked fairly early.

18. Troublemaker - Weezer: Off the new Red Album, but not the single "Pork and Beans." I do feel like this track has a similar message, as well as a fun fun style!

19. I Want You Back (Jackson 5 Cover) - Steel Train: Come on, how could this not be perfect for this post. Steel Train does a decent cover of this classic. There's no way you can't dance away to it. Also, has anyone else noticed that this song is a regular rotation in the nightlife scene? If it could just overtake any and every Journey song, I'd be in bliss. Boo Journey, Hooray Motown!

20. NERD (Never Ending Romance Disaster) - Anoraak: Check out this electronic new wave sad relationshipy song. The song acronym is also silly and probably related to the initial way I found this song.

21. Summer Skin - Death Cab for Cutie: Can't be a summer mix without some explicit summer reference. I think it's a great song catpuring that sun-setting feel.

22. Falling Out Of Reach - Guillemots: An end to the mix with some acoustic guitar and accent love. I fell for this song the first time I heard it. It's hard not to get caught up singing (or at least humming) along to the chorus. Darling, you're slowly drifting out of reach...

An Early Summer Tease - Ben Sollee

You may've noticed there was not May mix. That's because I've combined May and June for an early summer mix - capturing the warming nights and fireflys, but not quite beachtastic weather.

I've finally got the songs chosen, but before I post it all up I wanted to introduce you to some quality music from Ben Sollee. He rocks the cello (which more than a few of my musical friends have dabbled with) and folk-rock from good ol' Kentucky (a place we've all spent a week or two in). Anyways, here's the video done with a local modern dance group Ben Sollee works with to the song I'll have on the mix. Enjoy the track and check out more of his music at:http://www.myspace.com/bensollee.
